Don’t Spend More, Spend Smarter: Rewards Strategies That Attract and Retain IT Talent

Presented by Lily Mok, VP Analyst, Gartner

IT employees are optimistic and confident in their job opportunity prospects. Despite slower economies, hiring and layoffs, IT employees continue to show lower intent to stay, and higher expectations for pay increase whether in their current roles or when switching jobs. In this session, Lily Mok, VP Analyst at Gartner, discussed the challenges organizations are facing in today’s volatile and uncertain markets.

Key Takeaways

  • “Disruptive forces are increasingly unpredictable and persist longer, and short-term fixes are not sustainable.”

  • “Critical IT skills demand higher pay to attract and retain.”

  • “Link pay equity and pay competitiveness to align employee expectations with business objectives.”

  • “Establish a competitive IT compensation strategy that is resilient to market extremes.”

  • “Compensation is the number one factor for talent attraction and retention, yet ad hoc compensation adjustments made in response to retention risk are often suboptimal as it’s sometimes too late to persuade key talent of their value to the organization through last-minute deals.”

Examples of Edge Computing, Everywhere

Presented by Thomas Bittman, Distinguished VP Analyst, Gartner

Organizations across a variety of industries are harnessing edge computing for business benefits. In this session, Thomas Bittman, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner, shared examples infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders can use to learn what enterprises are doing today, and how use cases may evolve over time.

Key Takeaways

  • “There is diversity between industries, but use cases and technologies are emerging and maturing in one industry that will be applicable, over time, to many.”

  • “Edge computing is not an end-goal in itself. It’s a part of digital transformation.”

  • “Enterprises are on the digital edge journey, but even use cases can start at the edge, and evolve through phases."

  • “By 2026, at least 50% of edge computing deployments will involve machine learning, compared to 5% in 2022.”

  • “By 2027, two-thirds of all tier one multichannel retailers will have edge computing deployed in their stores.”

How Will Generative AI Impact the Future of Digital Workplace Operations

Presented by Tom Cipolla, Sr Director Analyst, Gartner

Generative AI (GenAI) will fundamentally change the way infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders support the digital workplace. In this session, Tom Cipolla, Sr Director Analyst at Gartner, shared how to prepare for rapid digital workplace management operations changes by assessing how GenAI could augment existing capabilities and use cases.

Key Takeaways

  • “More than 80% of digital workplace management tools will include GenAI capabilities, up from less than 5% in 2023.”

  • “The accuracy of GenAI produced information within tailored use cases, such as digital workplace management tools, will improve quickly. However, GenAI will never be able to replace human intuition, empathy, curiosity, experience and expertise within the digital workplace.”

  • “Digital workplace leaders should emphasize a blend of analytical and problem definition skills to be successful.”

  • “Take a ‘distrust and verify’ approach that requires validation of everything generated by GenAI, and keep in mind that any AI will be imperfect, despite its great potential.”

  • “Minimize risk of significant disruption by taking a pragmatic approach to GenAI.”
